Education is a basic human right, and is vital for personal and societal development and well-being. We are cognizant of the fact that for our host community to develop, meaningful literacy levels must be attained by community members. BMI supports the Government’s vision for the right to free and compulsory education for all children up to senior secondary level. Our education initiatives focus on enlightenment of rural and urban slum children, particularly the girl child. Our interventions include:
Fighting Illiteracy:
To improve
literacy and academic achievement levels in our host community of Mbarara
City, we support the renovation and restocking of library facilities in
government-aided primary schools.
Scholarships:
BMI offers an
excellence award to encourage children to perform better, and also in an
endeavor to assist less-privileged children remain in school. Since its
inception, more than 240 students at primary and vocational institutions
have collectively received excellence awards and sponsorships worth USD
10,000.
Research & Development:
BM
sponsors postgraduate research at the Industrial Engineering Research Group
of the Faculty of Applied Sciences and Technology, Mbarara University of
Science and Technology (MUST). The research focuses on the following areas:
- Waste water treatment
- Control of air pollution
- Use of slag for low-cost road construction materials
To contribute to efforts to prevent environmental degradation, we shall be working with the Renewable Energy Research Group at MUST to develop renewable and non-pollutant energy sources for rural communities.
